Printing on hoodies: choosing a method for teams and clubs

A workshop guide to printing on hoodies. Compare fabrics, methods and print positions for teams and clubs, with a planning example.

The right printing method and position for a hoodie depend on its fabric, your design and the quantity. This guide walks you through the choices for teams and clubs using typical requests from the Fabrik4 workshop.

Identify the hoodie fabric

Before choosing a method, check the fabric. The information on the label directly affects print quality. These are the hoodie fabrics we see most often in the workshop:

  • Heavy cotton (320-400 g/m²): A premium hoodie fabric made from 100 percent cotton. Absorbent and easy to print, especially with plastisol screen printing.
  • Cotton-polyester blend (80/20 or 70/30): Common for club hoodies. More robust and slightly smoother than pure cotton; works well with screen printing and DTF.
  • Performance polyester (technical or sports hoodies): Sublimation or DTF; conventional plastisol screen printing carries a risk of dye migration.
  • Lightweight hoodies under 250 g/m²: A print layer feels heavier on this fabric, which can lose its drape. We tend to recommend lightweight DTF prints or embroidery.
  • Tri-blends (cotton-polyester-rayon): Tricky. Film adheres poorly to the rayon component, so DTF is the safest choice.

Not sure what you ordered? Check the label or tell us the manufacturer’s model, and we’ll say what works. You’ll find a general comparison of textile printing methods in our printing methods guide.

Choose a method by quantity

50-150 piecesScreen printingDTF, screen-print transferFilm for large areas
150+ piecesScreen printingEmbroidery (for a premium occasion)DTF (unit price rises)

The table applies to logos in 1 or 2 colours. Full-colour designs make screen printing viable at higher quantities because more colours mean more setup costs; DTF can be economical even for larger runs.

Print positions on a hoodie

Hoodies have more printable areas than T-shirts, so choose the position deliberately. These are our usual workshop positions:

  • Left chest (over the heart): A classic logo position, 8 to 12 centimetres wide. Works with all methods.
  • Large centre chest: Around A4 size, suitable for designs and large logos. Screen printing and DTF work better than embroidery here, as embroidery becomes too heavy at this size.
  • Large back print: A large print, often used for a club name and crest. Screen printing or DTF.
  • Sleeves: Sponsors, extra logos or initials. The print area is smaller, and embroidery can look neat here.
  • Hood: Seams, folds and the hood’s shape limit the decoration area. Depending on the model, small designs can be printed, embroidered or applied as a patch.
  • Front of the kangaroo pocket: Possible, but the seam transitions make it difficult. We use it only in special cases.

For club hoodies, we often combine three positions: logo on the left chest, club name on the back and sponsor on a sleeve. Brand hoodies usually have one large chest or back print. Ask us if you’re unsure whether a combination will work.

Screen printing on hoodies

Screen printing can be economical for larger runs, particularly with designs in few colours. A rich ink layer is possible on heavy-cotton hoodies. Colour effect and durability depend on the fabric, ink, application and care.

Strengths: Often economical at a suitable high quantity. Rich ink coverage. Durability and suitability for industrial laundering must match the specific textile and printing system.

Limitations: Setup costs for each colour. Multicolour designs take more preparation. Blends with a high polyester content carry some risk of dye migration: polyester pigments can discolour plastisol prints.

Minimum order quantity: The economical quantity depends on the design and number of colours; for smaller orders, we also check DTF or transfers.

DTF on hoodies

DTF can suit small to medium runs with multicolour or detailed designs. Gradients and photo designs are possible if the artwork files are suitable. The size and placement of the design affect how it feels to wear.

Strengths: Multicolour designs are possible. We’ll check whether the chosen cotton, blended or polyester hoodie is suitable for DTF, and state the work involved and timing in the quote.

Limitations: For larger runs, we compare DTF with screen printing. Large DTF designs can affect breathability. Suitability for industrial laundering must be checked for the specific printing system.

Minimum order quantity: 1 piece. Ideal for sample hoodies.

Embroidery on hoodies

Embroidery gives hoodies a premium look. An embroidered chest logo with a printed back is a common combination we use for brand and higher-end club hoodies. The embroidered chest patch adds texture without making the hoodie look overloaded.

Strengths: A textured look and good durability on suitable material. Care and suitability for industrial laundering depend on the thread, textile and application.

Limitations: Hoodie fabric is thicker than T-shirt fabric, but embroidery can still make an area noticeably denser. On thin hoodies it can feel scratchy. Unit costs are higher, and full-colour photos are impossible.

Minimum order quantity: We’ll clarify the quantity and embroidery-file work in the quote.

Special considerations for club hoodies

For club and team hoodies, you also need to consider multiple print positions, personal details and sizes:

  • Multiple print positions: Large club name on the back, logo on the left chest, sponsor on a sleeve. Three positions are standard, sometimes four.
  • Individual player names or numbers: Sports clubs often need different details on each hoodie. Flex film works well for this lettering and can be combined with the club’s screen print or DTF design.
  • Different sizes: For mixed sizes, we check whether the design size and print position suit each model. We’ll state any setup work in the quote.
  • Seasonal deadlines: If you need the hoodies for a club event, tell us the date early. We’ll establish the lead time based on the model, quantity and method.
  • Repeat orders over several years: For recurring orders, it’s useful to keep the artwork files and model details. Whether a repeat order can be made faster depends on availability and method.

Include all sizes, print positions and planned repeat orders in your enquiry. We’ll put together a suitable quote.

Planning example: sports club

Planning example: A club wants 80 hoodies with a logo on the left chest, club name on the back, a sport name on one sleeve and a sponsor on the other.

For this example, we could check screen printing for the chest and back, and DTF for the sleeves. With hoodies made from an 80/20 blend in two colours, we’d need to confirm the material, design and availability before quoting.

The unit price here depends on the hoodie model, sizes, designs and four print positions. A reliable figure can only come from a specific quote.

Caring for printed hoodies

Hoodies get a lot of wear and are often washed incorrectly. Hot washing or tumble drying usually harms the print. You’ll find detailed care rules for each method in our care guide for printed textiles. In brief: wash hoodies inside out, cold or at 30 degrees, air dry instead of tumble drying, and avoid fabric softener.

If several people will wash the hoodies, pass on the care instructions for the chosen textile and printing method.

Frequently asked questions

Which method is most common for hoodies?

It depends on the design, fabric and quantity. DTF can suit small runs and screen printing larger runs; embroidery tends to work for compact logos on suitable fabric.

Can we print individual player names on each hoodie?

Yes. We use flex film for the individual details and combine it with the club’s screen print. Each personalised print needs little setup because film does not require a screen.

How long does an order of club hoodies take?

It depends on the hoodie model, quantity, artwork files and method. Tell us your preferred date so we can check the lead time.

Can we mix different hoodie models in one order?

Different models may be possible. We’ll check the fabric, sizes, print position and design for each model and state the work involved in the quote.

What does a club hoodie typically cost?

The price depends on the hoodie model, quantity, design and number of print positions. Send us your specific requirements for a quote.

Hoodies for your team or club?

Send us your logo and desired quantity, and tell us if you’d like a model recommendation. We’ll check the method and timing and send you a quote.
