Printing on bags and totes: jute, cotton and polyester

A workshop guide to printed bags and totes: materials by use, screen printing, transfers, DTF and embroidery, with quantity planning for boutiques, fairs and teams.

Bags and totes are familiar promotional products for mailings, trade fairs, boutiques and campaigns focused on materials. The fabric and printing method affect how a bag can be used day to day. This workshop guide helps you compare the choices.

When a promotional bag makes sense

Bags can serve four quite different promotional uses. The occasion shapes the material, method and quantity:

  • Trade fair or conference: A bag for visitors’ flyers and smaller promotional items. Unit price and logo visibility often matter more here than a premium fabric.
  • Boutique or shop: A branded shopping bag given with a purchase. Customers may later carry it around town for other purposes.
  • Eco-focused brand or campaign: Options include recycled cotton, RPET made from PET bottles and organic jute. If the material is part of your message, check the product evidence. The print can be understated.
  • Premium gift or employee set: A canvas or premium-cotton bag with embroidery or a special print. Useful life and visibility depend on the fabric, construction and use.

For a simple mailing, smaller items such as pens or lightersmay fit better. If the bag is actually carried, its logo may be seen beyond the event. Our promotional-products guideexplains the wider choice.

Fabric types at a glance

  • Jute (natural fibre with a coarse texture): A distinctive natural look. Its rough texture can affect print quality. It may suit farm shops, farmers’ markets and natural cosmetics.
  • Standard cotton (140 g/qm): A familiar promotional bag with a relatively smooth surface and medium weight. A sharp print may be possible. Consider it for trade fairs, mailings and light shopping.
  • Premium cotton (180 to 220 g/qm): Noticeably thicker fabric with a different feel. Durability depends on construction. An option for boutiques and premium campaigns.
  • Recycled cotton: A cotton blend made with textile offcuts. Its fibre structure may be somewhat coarser; check the product’s recycled content before making environmental claims.
  • Canvas (densely woven fabric): A dense weave; weight and handle strength depend on the model. An option for shopping bags and employee sets.
  • Polyester: A lightweight synthetic fabric that can often be folded or rolled. It may suit foldaway bags, sports events and outdoor promotions.
  • RPET (recycled polyester; check the source of the recycled material): Recycled polyester with properties that vary by model. Product data should support its recycled content and any environmental claims.

This table is a guide. If you need a specific fabric shade or a combination of materials, we’ll look more closely at the options.

Screen printing on cotton and jute

Screen printing on a cotton tote bag: opaque ink with the texture of the fabric visible.

Screen printing has long been used for cotton and jute bags. A stencil on a screen allows ink through only where the design should appear, transferring it directly to the fabric. Each colour needs its own screen and setup.

Strengths: It can produce an opaque, vivid print even on coloured fabric. Durability, washability and feel depend on the fabric, ink and care instructions. Coarse weaves may print differently from smooth cotton.

Limitations: Setup costs apply per colour and printed side. Full-colour CMYK prints are technically possible but generally economical only at larger quantities. Prints on coarse jute may appear grainy.

Planning quantities: Whether screen printing makes economic sense depends on the design, number of colours, bag model and quantity. We confirm price breaks in the quote.

Transfer and DTF printing

For small orders or detailed designs, transfer printing may suit. A design is printed on film and applied to the fabric with heat and pressure.

  • Traditional transfer printing (film): Setup and cost effectiveness depend on the design and quantity. The print sits visibly as a film layer, with a less natural fabric feel.
  • DTF (Direct-to-Film): A method for multicolour designs on many suitable fabrics. It can give sharp, opaque results on dark fabric. We compare it for medium-sized orders with complex designs.
  • Sublimation (on polyester / RPET): Dye enters the fibre rather than sitting in a film layer. It works only on polyester-based fabric; durability depends on the fabric and care.

DTF can suit detailed, multicolour designs on suitable cotton bags. For simple logos, we compare DTF and screen printing by design, fabric and quantity.

Embroidery for premium bags

Embroidery can give suitable bags a textured logo. Coloured thread is stitched directly into the fabric.

Strengths: Embroidery has its own texture and feel. Durability and care depend on the thread, fabric and construction.

Limitations: There may be setup costs for preparing the embroidery file, depending on design and order. Very fine lines and small letters are limited by the machine’s resolution. Unit price can be higher than printing.

Good fit: We check possible quantities and setup costs for canvas bags or employee sets against the model and design.

Sizes and handle options

  • Standard tote (approx. 38 x 42 cm): A common format for promotional orders. It can hold A4 documents, shopping or trade-fair items.
  • Mini bag (approx. 25 x 30 cm): A compact option for small promotional items, lunch packs or boutique purchases.
  • Large tote (approx. 45 x 50 cm): A larger format for boutique shopping or beach campaigns.
  • Drawstring sports bag: A lightweight option for outdoor and fitness use that closes quickly.
  • Foldaway polyester bag: Folds down small and may suit mailings or travel campaigns.

Handle options often change the feel of a bag more than the printing cost: short handles for carrying by hand, long ones for carrying over a shoulder. Choose the handle length and stitching to suit the intended load and use.

Quantities and costs

  • Under 100 pieces: Compare transfer printing, DTF and, where appropriate, screen printing against the design and actual quote.
  • 100 to 500 pieces: Embroidery, DTF and screen printing may suit, depending on the fabric and design. Costs depend on the quote.
  • 500 to 2’500 pieces: At larger quantities, compare screen printing with other methods. Price breaks and colour count depend on the design and quote.
  • 2’500 to 10’000 pieces: Larger orders for mailings, employee sets across several sites or club kits.
  • Over 10’000 pieces: For very large quantities, we check price breaks, special versions and suitable printing methods separately.

Lead time depends on the bag model, stock, quantity and decoration. Tell us your preferred date for a specific answer.

Planning example: boutique shopping bag

Planning example: A boutique wants branded shopping bags instead of anonymous plastic ones. The brief calls for a substantial feel, potential reuse over years and an elegant single-colour logo.

For this planning example, we could check cotton bags with a single-colour dark-green screen print and reinforced handles. The assumed quantity of 600 pieces is a planning figure only; lead time and cost depend on the chosen model.

For possible repeat orders, record the model, fabric colour, handles and artwork. Availability, lead time and cost must be checked each time.

Frequently asked questions

Which bag fabric suits which occasion?

Lighter cotton bags may suit trade fairs, while heavier models may suit shopping. Whether a bag can carry the intended contents depends on the fabric, seams and handles.

Can promotional bags be washed?

Whether a bag is washable, and at what temperature, is specified in the care instructions for the exact model and decoration. Jute, coated fabrics and prints cannot all be assumed machine-washable. Check care before ordering.

What is the difference between jute and cotton for promotional bags?

Jute has a distinctive natural look and coarse texture and may suit farm shops, farmers’ markets and natural cosmetics. Cotton is more neutral and can offer more printing options. The best fit depends on your audience and use.

Is embroidery worth considering for promotional bags?

Embroidery may suit an appropriate bag with a compact logo. For trade-fair or boutique bags, we compare it with screen printing and DTF by design, fabric and quantity.

Can I print full-colour logos on cotton bags?

Yes, DTF (Direct-to-Film) may allow full-colour, photographic designs, including on coloured fabric. The cost effectiveness of DTF and screen printing depends on the design, fabric and quantity.

What are typical lead times?

Lead time depends on the material, model, quantity and decoration. For special versions, we check current availability. Tell us your preferred date.

Are recycled bags really more sustainable?

Recycled cotton and RPET may contain recovered fibres. Whether a specific model has a lower environmental impact depends on recycled content, production and use. Ask for product evidence before communicating environmental benefits.
