Signs and banners identify a construction site and explain the project to passers-by. They can present the businesses involved, guide visitors or carry information specified by the site team. This guide distinguishes advertising, information and safety, then covers materials, fixing and artwork preparation.
Construction-site communication options
- Fence banner: A printed surface to show the project or business. Size is matched to measured dimensions and the fence’s capacity.
- Scaffold banner: A large visible surface during building work. Loads, anchors and access must be checked with those responsible for the scaffold.
- Project information sign: It can identify the project, client and contractors. Any mandatory information and format must be checked locally; there is no single rule for every construction project.
- Information signs: Visitor access, site entrance, deliveries and contact details. Clear information supports site organisation without replacing safety measures.
- Safety signage: Required signs are specified by the safety lead according to risks and applicable requirements.
- Contractor visibility: Separate signs can present participating businesses and be replaced when needed. A 600 × 800 mm size is one example, not a requirement.
Project duration helps select materials, but exposure and fixing remain decisive. To compare rigid signs, see the sign-making guide.
Choosing for the construction phase
| Phase | Option to consider | Alternative | Period to plan for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Excavation and foundations | Banner with project visualisation | Sign listing project participants | According to the excavation schedule |
| Structural work | Fence banner and project sign | Banner on an approved scaffold installation | According to the phase duration |
| Fit-out and finishing | Project graphics on scaffolding | Contractor signs | According to the phase duration |
| Civil engineering and roadworks | Information banner on fencing | Removable signs on a compatible surface | According to phases and relocation |
| Renovation of an occupied building | Information at the entrance | Floor-by-floor information | Update as work progresses |
| Housing development | Banner with visualisation and contact details | Sales information sign | According to the project schedule |
| Commercial construction | Investor project sign | Banner presenting the future occupant | Until the planned replacement |
Large-format fence banners
A visible fence can carry a simple project presentation: image, short message and contact details. Its effectiveness depends on passing traffic, readability and location, not just the printed area.
- Material: Solid PVC or mesh depending on the project. Weights such as 440 or 510 g/m² do not by themselves establish the strength of the installation.
- Printing: A large-format process compatible with the material. Artwork resolution is chosen for the image and viewing distance, not simply the printer’s advertised resolution.
- Size: Measure the actual fence panels, usable area and fixing points. Do not derive width solely from a number of supposedly standard fence panels.
- Fixing: Eyelets, straps or another system to suit the finishing. Spacing, strength and support must be checked for the area and loads.
- Mesh option: The openings allow some air through. They do not remove the need to check the fence, anchors and operating limits.
A banner measuring 6 × 2 m has an area of 12 m². Its arrangement on the fence and artwork must be planned using the actual site dimensions.
Scaffold banners and fixing
A scaffold banner can cover a large area. Its size makes technical planning and agreement with the responsible site team particularly important.
- Mesh: It can reduce loads compared with a comparable solid sheet. Material data and the complete structure still need checking.
- Perimeter fixing: Loads transfer to attachment points and the scaffold. The system must be specified by competent personnel, not improvised by using a stronger cable.
- Joining printed sections: Print width, welds and joins depend on material and process. Plan seams before finalising artwork.
- Equipment and access: Keep required lighting, signs, openings and access clear. Any cut-out or interruption must be planned as part of the project.
- Permissions: Check required procedures and timing with the municipality and site team before starting production.
Specify who handles design, permissions, printing, transport, installation and removal. We agree Fabrik4’s services and interfaces with partners before ordering.
Project information signs
A project sign can present the client, designers and contractors. Distinguish this communication from any official notices required for the site.
- Size: A1, 594 × 841 mm, or A0, 841 × 1’189 mm, are examples. Content and any local requirements determine the size.
- Material: Aluminium composite or another panel suited to exposure and fixing. Foamed PVC is not automatically suitable for every outdoor installation.
- Content: Project name, contacts and logos as agreed. Have the project team separately confirm any mandatory information.
- Installation: On a structure or fence panel whose capacity and fixings have been checked.
- Updates: Separate sections can simplify adding contractors or changing contact details.
A reusable template keeps presentation consistent between sites. Check wording, logos and local requirements for each project.
Site information signs
- Construction-site warning: Use wording and symbols appropriate to the risks and site requirements.
- No unauthorised access: A sign can communicate the restriction. It does not replace protective measures or secure access.
- Site access and truck exit: Plan visibility and placement with those responsible for traffic. Road-related requirements must be checked separately.
- Site management contact: Display approved contact details and keep them current. Confirm any locally required information.
- Information for neighbours: A schedule and contact can explain disruptive phases. Content is approved by the site lead.
Prioritise readability and consistency. The sign must still suit the exposure and planned duration, even for temporary use.
Safety signage
Safety signage follows the risk assessment and applicable requirements. The safety lead selects signs and their positions. The following categories are examples, not a universal mandatory checklist:
- Head protection: The sign specified by the safety plan for the relevant areas.
- Hearing protection: Specify according to assessed noise exposure, not an isolated threshold in a commercial guide.
- Eye protection: According to task risks and the protective equipment specified.
- Fall protection: Required measures and signs are defined in the safety plan. Height alone is not enough to choose the system.
- Prohibitions: For example no entry or no smoking, using appropriate approved symbols.
- Hazardous substances: Plan identification for the substances present and applicable requirements; keep it distinct from site advertising.
- Emergency exits and first aid: Signs must match the actual emergency arrangements and routes.
Send the approved list, sizes and durability requirements. We confirm products, availability and timing before ordering. This page does not promise permanent stock or SUVA certification.
Materials and service life
| Material | Application | Service life to assess | Reuse |
|---|---|---|---|
| 440 g/m² PVC banner | Fence banner | Depends on grade and exposure | After checking material and fixings |
| 510 g/m² PVC banner | Subject to project and structure | Depends on specification and site conditions | After checking material and fixings |
| Air-permeable mesh | Scaffolding after installation assessment | Depends on material, wind and fixing | Depends on condition |
| 5 mm foamed PVC | Site and project information | Depends on grade and exposure | Depends on condition |
| 3 mm aluminium composite | Project sign, subject to fixing | Depends on panel and graphics | If still suitable and intact |
| 3 mm foamed PVC | Safety signage | Depends on specification and site conditions | If still suitable and intact |
A design without a specific date or address can make reuse easier. Check the banner, seams and fixings before each installation, then confirm suitability for the next site.
Permissions and site requirements
- Required notices: Ask the project team and municipality what must be displayed. Do not infer a universal requirement from an advertising-sign template.
- Fence advertising: Check local rules before ordering, even without lighting. Location, dimensions and proximity to roads may matter.
- Scaffold banner: For scaffold banners, clarify permissions, responsibilities and timing with the relevant parties before manufacture.
- Illuminated advertising: Include the lighting in the proposal and have the applicable requirements confirmed.
- Safety signage: Symbols and installation must meet requirements defined by the competent site team. Compliance is not established by the printed substrate alone.
- Information about disruption: The project lead confirms the content, audience and communication schedule.
Example application: residential construction
Example concept for a residential development: a presentation banner, a project sign and the signs specified by the safety lead.
The artwork can combine an image of the future building with contact details. A rigid sign lists participants. Dimensions are measured on site; safety information stays distinct from advertising.
Plan updates, installation and removal from the outset. This illustrates a possible arrangement without promising stock, timing or an unverified customer outcome.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a fence banner last?
It depends on material, exposure, tension and maintenance. Weight alone does not establish a guaranteed lifespan. Check edges and attachments regularly.
Does construction-site advertising need permission?
Check with the municipality, owner and site team before ordering. Fences, scaffolding, lighting and dimensions may have different requirements.
Can the banner be reused?
Yes, if the design is still relevant and the material and fixings are intact. Clean and store it according to product instructions, then inspect everything before the next installation.
How do we order safety signs?
Send the references or list approved by the safety lead. We check sizes, materials, availability and timing. This guide does not replace a risk assessment.
How much does construction-site signage cost?
Pricing depends on area, material, finishing and agreed services. Use the product calculator or request a quotation including the required accessories and installation.
What is the production lead time?
It is confirmed after specifying the materials and approving artwork. Large assemblies, permissions and site work may need additional planning.
Can the project sign be updated?
Yes, if replaceable sections are planned or the panel can accept compatible replacement graphics. Price and timing are confirmed for each change.
Do you offer installation?
We agree the scope for the fence, scaffold, height and access. Those responsible for the structure must approve loads and fixing before installation.
What about reflective films?
They can improve visibility under suitable illumination. The grade, viewing angle and traffic-related requirements must be checked for the location.
Need to make a construction or renovation project visible?
Send the phases, dimensions and site photographs. We can prepare a coordinated set of signs and banners with a clear scope for services and required approvals.
