Banners and flags cover many uses, from a reception-area roll-up and a beachflag at a club event to a large mesh banner on scaffolding. The right choice depends on the location, size and fixing system, not just the price. This guide compares five material families and explains what to check for wind exposure, sunlight and repeated use. When to choose a banner or flag
- Club or outdoor event: A beachflag or hoisted flag at the entrance, with one or two sponsor banners on the fence or near the stage.
- Sporting event: Banners on walls, scaffolding or perimeter barriers. Consider mesh in exposed locations and solid PVC in sheltered positions, with suitable fixing.
- Exhibitions and presentations: Roll-up or X-banner displays behind the stand, or tensioned fabric in a frame for a clean finish.
- Shop opening or promotion: A beachflag outside the entrance and window graphics. The flag attracts attention and is easy to move.
- Construction-site advertising: Fence and scaffolding banners. See our construction-site advertising guide.
- Seasonal promotions: A replaceable banner or flag complements the shop’s permanent signage.
- Temporary events and pop-ups: Roll-ups and beachflags can be reused when the hardware and design still suit the occasion.
In practice, banners and flags suit temporary or recurring campaigns. For a permanent installation lasting several years, also compare rigid signs and vinyl graphics. Actual service life depends on the product and exposure.
Five material families compared
- Perforated PVC mesh: Its open structure lets some air through. It is useful for fences and scaffolding, provided the fixing and supporting structure are designed for the site.
- Solid PVC: A classic advertising banner material, including 440 or 510 g/m² grades. For double-sided displays, choose a material specifically intended for that purpose.
- Fabric banner: Polyester fabric with a softer appearance, popular for exhibitions and retail spaces. Outdoor suitability and crease resistance depend on the fabric and display system.
- Hoisted-flag fabric: Polyester designed for flags on poles. A single-sided print generally shows through in reverse on the back. Durability depends on exposure and care.
- Beachflag fabric: Lightweight polyester matched to the beachflag’s shape and pole. The fabric is a wear item; check compatibility before ordering a replacement.
Each material has its strengths. Mesh remains see-through and is not a substitute for an opaque indoor display. Outdoors, selection must account for wind and the complete supporting structure, not just the banner.
Choosing a format for the occasion
| Occasion | Suggested format | Material |
|---|---|---|
| Club-event entrance | 2 m beachflag | Beachflag fabric |
| Pitch-side sponsor banner | 2 × 1 m banner | 510 g/m² solid PVC |
| Scaffolding advertising | Mesh sized to the supporting structure | PVC mesh |
| Exhibition backdrop | 85 or 100 cm roll-up | Fabric compatible with the display system |
| Shop opening | Beachflag or X-banner suited to the location | Beachflag fabric or compatible PVC |
| Flagpole outside the premises | 1.50 × 4 m flag | Polyester flag fabric |
| Construction fence advertising | 8 m banner, subject to the supporting structure | 510 g/m² solid PVC |
| Seasonal window promotion | 3 × 1 m tensioned banner | 440 g/m² solid PVC |
Mesh banners and wind exposure

Mesh is an open PVC fabric. Its holes can reduce wind loading compared with a comparable solid banner, but do not make an installation storm-proof. Check the technical data for openness, material strength and installation limits.
- Mesh types: Openness varies by manufacturer. Open area, printable area and air permeability are not interchangeable specifications.
- Use: Scaffolding, fences, facades and sports installations after checking the supporting structure and loads.
- Printing: The openings interrupt the image. Use bold colour areas, a prominent logo and limited small text.
- Service life: It depends on the specific material, exposure, installation and care. The word mesh alone does not guarantee a number of years.
For a large exposed surface, have the material, fixing and supporting structure checked by the person responsible for the installation. Mesh can help, but does not replace this assessment.
Solid PVC outdoor banners

Solid PVC suits sponsor banners, fences and promotions in suitable locations. Common weights include 440 and 510 g/m². Weight alone does not establish strength.
- 440 g/m²: An option for temporary campaigns or sheltered locations, subject to its technical specification.
- 510 g/m²: A heavier material to consider for repeated use. Also check tear resistance and finishing quality.
- Finishing: Hems, pole pockets or eyelets to suit the installation. Eyelet spacing and reinforcement are specified for the size and support.
- Printing process: UV, solvent or latex printing, depending on the material. For two independent faces, specify a suitable double-sided material such as blockout.
Fabric banners for indoor use

Printed fabrics provide an attractive indoor finish. Sublimation dyes polyester fibres. Weight, opacity, creasing and transport requirements depend on the selected fabric.
- Exhibitions and stands: Backdrops and tension frames. Fabric offers a different appearance from PVC.
- Retail displays: Seasonal promotions, branded walls and hanging banners with a compatible display system.
- Transport: Some fabrics fold easily. Follow the material’s instructions to minimise crease marks.
- Outdoor use: Choose a fabric and system explicitly intended for outdoor use. A frame alone does not make every fabric suitable.
Fabrics and hoisted flags

Hoisted flags are designed for flagpoles. The usually lightweight polyester must suit the size and operating conditions. Fixings depend on the pole:
- Vertical pole: Example sizes include 1.20 × 3 m or 1.50 × 4 m. Clips, webbing and any pole pocket must match the system.
- Angled pole outside a shop: A flag with a pocket or fixing suitable for the angled pole. Its size should remain readable from the street.
- Private or club flagpole: Examples include 1 × 1.50 m or 1.20 × 1.80 m. Choose clips or a pole pocket to suit the existing pole.
- Service life: Wind and rubbing accelerate wear, especially around seams and fixings. Inspect the flag regularly.
On a single-layer flag, the print shows through and is normally mirrored on the reverse. Correct-reading text on both sides or different designs requires a specific double-sided construction, which is heavier and must be checked against the pole specification.
Beachflags for outdoor events

A beachflag is easy to move and assemble. Its pole carries a tall, narrow fabric graphic on a suitable base. It suits club events, promotions, openings and sports events. See also our guides to Outdoor event and festival signage and Public-viewing and sporting-event signage.
- Common heights: Examples include 2.50, 3.50 and 4.50 m. Overall height and print size vary by model. Greater height also means more wind exposure.
- Fabric: Lightweight polyester with sublimation printing, depending on the material. Single-sided printing generally shows through reversed on the back.
- Base: Cross base, ground spike, fillable base or weighted plate. Choose according to the ground, flag size and manufacturer’s limits.
- Wind limits: These depend on the complete pole, fabric and base assembly. Follow the instructions and remove the flag before its limits are reached; do not wait for a storm.
- Reuse: The pole and base can serve several compatible graphics. Fabric remains a wear item to check before each setup.
Fixing systems
- Eyelets and suitable ties: A common way to mount PVC banners. Eyelets are fitted into the hem at spacing appropriate to the installation.
- Pole pocket and bar: A bar passes through the pocket and connects to the intended support, such as a wall or hanging structure.
- Clips and edge finishing: Hoisted-flag fixings must match the halyard and pole system.
- Pole sleeve: The pole passes through a sleeve in the flag. This is suitable only for systems designed for that fitting.
- Roll-up mechanism: The graphic retracts into a cassette and is extended onto a support pole during setup. Useful for exhibitions.
- Aluminium frame: Compatible fabric is tensioned in the frame for an even surface.
Wind and outdoor durability
Wind loads act on the graphic, fixings and support. The Beaufort references below describe conditions, not product wind ratings:
- Beaufort 0–3: Even in light winds, check assembly, stability and the system’s limits.
- Beaufort 4–5: Loads increase. Check the product-specific limits; adding ballast alone is not a safety assessment.
- Beaufort 6–7: Do not rely on a general recommendation to leave a display standing. Follow the removal plan for the site and equipment.
- Beaufort 8 and above: Storms require advance action. Make installations safe before arrival, under the site manager’s instructions. Mesh does not make a banner immune to wind.
For exposed scaffolding, fences or facades, arrange a load assessment and a bad-weather plan. Neither mesh nor doubled ties replaces a properly designed installation.
Checking your artwork
- Format: Supply artwork at 1:1 or clearly state the scale. Large formats can be prepared at a reduced scale with an agreed final resolution.
- Resolution: Around 100 dpi at final size can suit distance viewing; closer details may need more. We check against the artwork.
- Colour: Follow the colour profile requested for the product. A Pantone reference can help discuss a brand colour, but does not guarantee an exact match.
- Bleed: Use the product template. Allow the required safe zones for hems, pockets and eyelets; one universal allowance does not suit every product.
- Fonts: Embed fonts in the PDF or convert them to outlines. Size text for the viewing distance and keep the layout simple.
- Single-sided or double-sided flags: One file is enough for a single-sided flag with a mirrored reverse. Independent faces need appropriate artwork and construction.
Cost-effectiveness and reuse
- Roll-up and X-banner: Useful for repeated events. Check whether the model supports replacement graphics and what the process involves.
- Beachflag: Fabric wears out, while the pole and base can be reused after inspection. A practical option for an annual event.
- Solid PVC banner: Suitable for seasonal campaigns and sponsors. A date-free design makes reuse easier.
- Scaffolding mesh: Compare the full cost: material, finishing, installation and inspections. Selection must first meet the site’s requirements.
- Hoisted flag: Taking it down when not in use can reduce exposure. Follow care instructions and inspect the seams.
For repeat use, better finishing and reusable hardware can make sense. For a one-off campaign, choose a simple solution without reducing safety requirements.
Example: club event with beachflags and banners
For a sports-club event, the aim is to make the entrance visible, display sponsors and reuse the equipment at future events. Here is one possible configuration. For club partnerships, see Material sponsorship for clubs. For artwork preparation and panel planning, see Prepress and vector artwork.
Configuration: Two 3.50 m beachflags at the entrance, four 2 × 1 m sponsor banners and a 1.20 × 4 m flag on the club’s pole. Bases and fixings must match the ground and supports.
Timing and reuse: The example mentioned two weeks after artwork approval and assembly by the club. For a new project, timing is confirmed with the order. Inspect graphics and hardware before reuse and replace worn components.
Frequently asked questions
Which material lasts longest outdoors?
There is no universal service life. The specific material, wind, sunlight, fixing and care matter more than a generic name. We select the material for the location and intended duration.
Can I reuse a banner?
Yes, if its condition and fixings allow it. Clean as instructed, let it dry and store without sharp folds, usually rolled for PVC.
What is the difference between a beachflag and a hoisted flag?
A beachflag uses a portable pole and a base suited to the ground. A hoisted flag is designed for a fixed or angled pole with matching fixings.
Do banners and flags need permission?
Check with the municipality, property owner and site manager before installation. Do not assume that private land automatically removes the need for permission.
How long does production take?
Timing depends on the material, finishing, stock and artwork approval. Check the product information or request confirmation for a specific date. Express production requires separate confirmation.
How much does a banner or flag cost?
Price depends on size, material, finishing and hardware. Use the product calculator or request a quote including accessories and any installation.
Can a flag be printed on both sides?
Single-sided printing generally shows through mirrored on the back. Correct-reading text on both sides or two different designs needs a specific double-sided construction compatible with the pole.
Do you arrange installation on fences or scaffolding?
We clarify installation according to the location, height and access. For scaffolding, the person responsible for the structure must approve loads and fixing. Our scope is specified in the quote.
What should I do in a storm?
Plan ahead and follow the equipment limits and site plan. Have competent people remove or secure displays before dangerous conditions arrive. Mesh is not a guarantee of storm resistance.
