Changing shop window graphics: planning seasonal campaigns

Plan shop window changes with permanent areas, seasonal graphics, artwork, installation and removal. A practical guide for retailers.

A shop window can keep a consistent identity while its message changes through the seasons. Separate your logo and permanent information from temporary graphics. This guide covers areas, artwork, installation, removal and budgeting. To compare techniques, see the shop window graphics guide.

Why change the graphics

A new graphic can highlight a collection, offer or event. It does not guarantee more visitors. Choose a useful message and a schedule that suits your business rather than changing it every few weeks by default.

  • Fashion shop: For example, one campaign for each season. Dates follow collections and selling periods.
  • Café or restaurant: A terrace, new menu or holiday season may warrant a change. The logo stays in place.
  • Hair or beauty salon: Announce a new service or a temporary offer without replacing the entire window display.
  • Other retailers: Match the schedule to actual launches and promotions. Not every sale period needs new graphics.

Keep a recognisable base and change elements that provide new information. The right frequency depends on your business, location and budget.

Separate permanent and temporary areas

To make changes easier, plan separate areas rather than overlapping films:

  • Permanent area: Place the logo and useful information where they remain readable. Make opening hours separately replaceable. Durability depends on the film and its exposure.
  • Campaign area: Reserve an area for an image, collection or offer. Leave enough visibility into the window display.
  • Additional temporary message: A small clear area can accommodate an opening, local event or specific promotion.

Avoid covering permanent lettering with campaign film. Even with separate areas, protect neighbouring elements during removal and cleaning.

Plan the schedule

Example schedule to adapt for a shop:

  • Spring: Introduce the new collection when it arrives, with an end date that fits the next campaign.
  • Summer and sales: Prepare summer graphics, then a sale message if needed. Avoid leaving expired information on display.
  • Autumn: Highlight the autumn collection until the next campaign begins.
  • Holidays and winter: Plan gift or winter promotions, then remove messages tied to the holiday period.

Plan changes ahead and confirm artwork approval, production and installation dates. Urgent requests depend on availability; timing and any surcharge must be confirmed.

Prepare the artwork

Measure the window and define a reusable campaign area. A template helps with future graphics, but dimensions and obstructions still need checking.

  • Size: Artwork must follow the agreed dimensions, scale and bleed. For example, 1,800 × 1,500 mm describes an area, not a universal production format.
  • Resolution: Check images at their final size against viewing distance and detail. One resolution value does not suit every graphic.
  • Colour and contrast: White, clear and backlit films reproduce colours differently. Do not automatically increase saturation; request a sample when colour is critical.
  • Text: Use a short main message that can be read while passing. Put details on another medium.

You can supply production-ready artwork to the agreed specifications. If you need help, we agree the design work and cost. A reusable template simplifies later campaigns.

Remove and replace the graphic

Time depends on the area, existing film, cleaning and access. Plan these steps:

  1. Preparation: Provide the required access and agree a slot that works with business operations.
  2. Removing the old film: Use a method compatible with the film and glazing. Heat, scrapers and solvents are not suitable for every surface. Older material may require more work.
  3. Removing adhesive: Residue may remain. Cleaning products and tools must be compatible with the glass, its coatings and nearby elements.
  4. Installing the new film: Follow the selected system’s instructions. Some films require dry installation, others wet installation; the method is not interchangeable.
  5. Adhesive curing: Follow the manufacturer’s timing and conditions before cleaning or stressing the film.

Installation side depends on the glazing, film compatibility, reading direction and exposure. Inside is not always preferable. See also the shop window graphics guide.

Budget over time

Compare initial costs with each subsequent change without assuming automatic payback in year two:

  • Initially: Measurement, design, any permanent lettering, first graphic and installation. Price depends on the project.
  • For later campaigns: Artwork updates, production, removal, cleaning and installation. Also check the permanent elements.
  • Assessing the effect: Record dates and messages, then compare enquiries, sales or customer feedback while considering other marketing activity.

You already have the window space, but design, printing and changes still cost money. Assess this channel alongside your other marketing.

Concept example: four campaigns

Illustrative example, not a documented customer reference: a shop plans four campaigns around a fixed identity.

Initial planning: Define areas, dimensions, visual identity and a template. Plan the first graphic alongside permanent lettering if needed.

Schedule: Plan four dates around collections, then confirm approvals and appointments with those involved.

What to review: Actual costs, condition of the graphics, ease of changes and business feedback. No increase in footfall is guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I change my window graphics?

When there is a useful new message: a collection, offer or event. Match the frequency to your business and budget rather than a fixed rule.

Can I remove the film myself?

It depends on the film, glass and access. Check the method and risks first. A small area does not automatically make heat or scrapers safe.

What happens to permanent lettering?

It stays in a separate area. Protect it during removal and check its condition; lifespan depends on material and exposure.

When should I approve the artwork?

By the agreed deadline for production and installation. Urgent availability and any surcharge must be confirmed before ordering.

How much does a window campaign cost?

Size, film, design, removal and installation determine the price. An existing template may reduce design work, not every cost.

Can I supply the artwork?

Yes, to the agreed size, scale, colour and bleed specifications. We clarify any design assistance before production.

Can I use temporary graphics without permanent lettering?

Yes, for example for a pop-up or short rental. The concept should still make the business and useful information clear.

Can we plan several changes ahead?

Yes, we can discuss a schedule and responsibilities. Scope, availability and prices must be agreed for your project.
