A door sign helps visitors identify the right office or practice. Material, readability and fixing contribute to the first impression. Here is how to compare acrylic, metal and insert systems for a consistent result that is easy to update.
Which sign for which location?
- Medical practice: Acrylic or metal to suit the style and cleaning protocol. Disinfectant compatibility must be checked for the complete panel and graphics.
- Law firm or consultancy: Brushed stainless steel or acrylic with a readable name and role.
- Architecture or design studio: Acrylic, metal or wood to complement the space’s visual identity.
- Coworking and shared offices: An insert system allows names to change without replacing the complete sign.
- Hotels and hospitality, indoors: Metal or acrylic to match the interior. Check the permitted cleaning products for the chosen finish.
- Clubroom and training room: Foamed PVC or simple acrylic for functional information.
The first question is how often the information will change. Fixed graphics may suit stable information. If occupants or functions change regularly, compare an insert system. For other materials, see the sign-making guide.
Materials in detail
- 3 mm clear acrylic: An option for small signs. Reverse printing adds depth; dimensions and fixings must be compatible.
- 5 to 8 mm clear acrylic: A more visible thickness for reception signs. Choose it for size and appearance rather than treating thickness alone as a quality grade.
- Frosted acrylic: A diffused finish to compare under the intended lighting.
- 1.5 to 2 mm brushed stainless steel: A metallic appearance with marking specified for the grade and artwork.
- Anodised aluminium: Lightweight, with finishes depending on availability. Confirm the exact colour for the selected product.
- Wood: oak, birch plywood or bamboo Grain and engraving give character. Results vary with the panel.
- 3 mm foamed PVC: A lightweight option for functional indoor information.
Choosing by application
| Application | Option to consider | Alternative | Method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medical practice entrance | 5 mm acrylic on standoffs | Brushed stainless steel | Reverse UV printing |
| Consulting room | 3 mm acrylic on standoffs | Foamed PVC | Direct UV printing |
| Law firm office door | Brushed stainless steel | 5 mm acrylic | Laser engraving |
| Architecture studio | Frosted acrylic or oak | Anthracite anodised aluminium | Laser engraving |
| Shared office with changing occupants | Rail with replaceable inserts | Magnetic signs | Printing on a replaceable insert |
| Multi-tenant building | Multi-sign rail system | Individual acrylic signs | Printing on a replaceable insert |
| Meeting rooms | Acrylic with an insert | Digital display, separate project | Printing on a replaceable insert |
| Hotel rooms and conference floor | Stainless steel or brass | Acrylic on standoffs | Laser engraving |
Planning standoff installation
Standoffs hold the sign away from the wall. Their size, number and fixing depend on the panel and substrate. These are the points to prepare, following the system instructions:
- Plan the panel holes: Define positions with the panel size, artwork margins and chosen fixings before manufacture.
- Check the wall position: A full-size template helps check height, alignment and access. Confirm that it matches the actual holes.
- Prepare the substrate: Check the wall construction and concealed services at drilling positions. Use suitable anchors; involve a competent installer if unsure.
- Fit the standoffs: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for screws, anchors and tightening. Excessive tightening can damage the system.
- Install the panel: Use the specified washers and components. Check support, alignment and security without stressing the panel.
Standoff quantity cannot be determined from A4 or A3 size alone. Consider weight, thickness, spacing, wall construction and system specifications.
Inserts and interchangeable systems

When names or roles change, an insert allows the frame to stay. Compare the initial cost and expected replacements.
- Frame with clip-in insert: The frame remains in place and a compatible insert is replaced. Materials and mechanisms vary by model.
- Magnetic signs on steel backing: The backing stays fixed and magnetic elements can be removed. Check that they remain securely held.
- Clamping profiles with an insert: Profiles hold a replaceable graphic. Use the thickness and material specified for the system.
- Multi-position rail: For tenant directories or several rooms on one floor.
An interchangeable system is useful where updates are likely. Value depends on sign quantities and actual costs, not a universal threshold of one change per year.
Sizes and readability
- Landscape A6, 148 × 105 mm: Compact, for a name or short message read nearby.
- Landscape A5, 210 × 148 mm: A starting point for a name and role on a door.
- Landscape A4, 297 × 210 mm: More room for several names or details without making the lettering too small.
- Landscape A3, 420 × 297 mm: For a reception area or a longer directory where space allows.
- Custom sizes: For example a vertical 200 × 800 mm sign, adapted to the door and architecture.
Lettering size depends on the wording, typeface, contrast and viewing distance. Check a full-size layout at the actual location.
A coordinated set for the building
In a shared building, use consistent names and styling at every stage:
- Entrance directory: It lists occupants by floor. Inserts simplify tenant changes.
- Sign at the lift or staircase exit: It identifies destinations on that floor.
- Sign at each door: It confirms arrival at the right place and uses the same wording as the directory.
Agree the design with the building manager or owner. Names can then vary without redesigning every sign.
Practices: cleaning and site requirements
- Cleaning compatibility: Check the cleaning product, concentration and frequency against the panel, ink, film and fixings. Some disinfectants can damage acrylic or graphics.
- Access around the sign: Standoffs leave a gap behind the sign but also add components to clean. Select the fixing with those responsible for maintenance.
- Special requirements: If a facility requires a particular surface or supporting documentation, confirm this before ordering. Do not assume that a standard material has antimicrobial properties.
- Printing and disinfection: UV curing does not guarantee resistance to all disinfectants. Check the system specification and, where necessary, test against the location’s cleaning protocol.
Example application: six rooms in a law firm
Example concept for a six-room law firm: three offices with stable names, two with more frequent occupant changes and a meeting room.
Fixed signs can suit the first offices and inserts the other two. A consistent style connects every door; the meeting room can have an indicator suited to its use.
Plan updates and installation from the outset. This example describes an option, without an invented customer testimonial or delivery promise.
Frequently asked questions
Acrylic or stainless steel: which should I choose?
Stainless steel provides a metallic appearance; acrylic offers transparency and depth. Compare the finish with the interior, contrast and intended cleaning.
How long does installation take?
It depends on the wall, access, sign quantity and system. A photograph helps plan the work; timing is confirmed with the scope.
Can we fit the signs ourselves?
Some simple systems can be self-fitted with the correct instructions and a suitable surface. Drilled fixings or uncertain wall construction need assessment before work starts.
How do inserts work?
The frame stays in place and only the part carrying the text changes. Size, material and replacement method depend on the chosen model.
What are the lead times?
They are confirmed for the material, quantity, artwork approval and installation. Urgent work requires separate agreement.
How much does a door sign cost?
Send size, quantity, preferred material and a site photograph. The quotation specifies preparation, graphics, accessories and any installation.
Can a full-colour logo be printed?
Yes, on a surface compatible with the selected method. Reverse printing on acrylic is one option. For metal, we check the process and adhesion rather than assuming engraving is the only choice.
Are the signs suitable for a practice or hospital?
The complete system must suit the facility’s protocol. Provide cleaning requirements and any required documentation before selecting the panel, graphics and fixing.
Need signs for a practice, law firm or offices?
Send the application, number of doors and a few photographs. We can define a common layout and the information for each room.
